Lebanese General Arrested For Conversing With Israelis
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Beirut issued an arrest warrant for a Lebanese general Wednesday after evidenced surfaced that he had held polite conversation over a cup of tea with invading Israeli forces. In a statement released to the press, Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmed Fatfat said Brig.-Gen. Adnan Daoud, head of a 1,000 strong joint army-police force in the southern Lebanon town of Marjayoun, had been summoned and taken into custody pending further questioning. Advancing Israeli forces entered Marjayoun last week and commandeered the barracks housing Daoud's force. The general and 350 of his men were held by the Israelis for 24 hours before being released. A video shot during that time reportedly shows Daoud sharing tea and conversing with smiling Israeli soldiers in the courtyard of the base. It was aired on Israeli and Lebanese television Wednesday. Lebanon remains in an official state of war with Israel, and its laws forbid Lebanese citizens from having dealings with the Jewish state. The thousands of Lebanese who worked in Israel during the latter's 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon were tried and sentenced to jail terms after the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces in May 2000.
