First Female Judge Nominated By South Korean President
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - President Roh Moo-hyun has nominated the first female judge for the post of chief justice of the country's Constitutional Court. If cleared by parliament, Chon Hyo-suk will head a nine-member top court. A ruling-party lawmaker also became the country's first female prime minister last May. The developments signal the future of better political representation for women in a South Korea predominantly ruled by men. Chon, 55, passed the judicial exam in 1975 and worked as a judge at district courts before moving to the Constitutional Court in 2003. The nomination comes after a recent spate of corruption scandals involving several judges and a former senior judge charged with taking bribes in exchange for influence. The incumbent chief of the Supreme Court had issued a public apology over the matter.
