Despite Security Young Boy Boards Plane Near London
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter London, United Kingdom (AHN) - Despite increased security at airports, a 12-year-old boy is able to get on a jetliner outside London without a passport or a boarding pass. Cabin crew found the boy and airport police took him into custody. Officials say they do not know how he managed to get on board, particularly since stricter security measures were instituted last week following the uncovering of a failed plot to bomb planes leaving the United Kingdom. The unnamed boy left a children's home near Liverpool and took a train to London, before heading to Gatwick airport. The trip totaled 245 miles. Phil Green, spokesman for the Wigan town council, which is in charge of the boy's care, tells The Associated Press, "Police were alerted as soon as it was realized he had absconded." The youngster got past security at Gatwick and boarded a 6 a.m. Monarch Airlines flight to Lisbon, Portugal. Prior to departure, a crew member took him to the airport police station. Christine Smith, a Sussex police spokeswoman, says the boy waited in the station until social services officials arrived. She says, "As far as I'm aware he was quite well-behaved." The British Airports Authority is investigating the incident.
