Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Brasilia, Brazil (AHN) - Former dictator of Paraguay, Alfredo Stroessner, dies in a Brazilian hospital. He was 93. He contracted pneumonia after undergoing a hernia operation on July 29. Stroessner ruled the country for 35 years until he was ousted in 1989 and subsequently exiled. Paraguay said earlier that it would not pay tribute to him because he was wanted for questioning over the disappearance of political prisoners in the 1970s. In 1954, then Gen. Stroessner took power during a coup. Paraguay had been struggling under years of instability and dozens of leaders since 1870. Former military colleagues ousted Stroessner in 1989. By that time, he had been in power longer than any contemporary leader in the Western Hemisphere. He was granted political asylum in Brazil, where he lived a life of isolation. Paraguayan judicial authorities had tried to bring Stroessner back to the country to answer for alleged rights abuses.
