Germany Mulls Idea Of Sending Troops To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Debate has begun in Germany over the use of German troops in a United Nations force in southern Lebanon. Defense Minister Franz-Josef Jung, speaking at a military base in Hanover on Tuesday, said he would illustrate Germany's capabilities in the military mission to the UN. Spiegel Online reported that chancellor Angela Merkel, Edmond Stoiber, the head of conservatives in Bavaria, and Deputy Chancellor Franz Muntefering will hold a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue. Foreign policy spokesman, Eckart von Klaeden said it was not if Germany would participate, but how it would play a role in Lebanon. "I think it is a given that we should contribute but what the contribution will look like will only come after ongoing talks," said Mr von Klaeden. One option Klaeden mentioned was the use of German Naval ships to patrol the coastline of Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in an interview with Suddeutsche newspaper said he told the Chancellor that Israel had "absolutely no problem with German soldiers in southern Lebanon."
