Oil To Arrive In Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Two oil tankers are expected to reach Lebanon on Wednesday amidst an oil shortage that has skyrocketed prices at the pump. The two tankers, formerly chartered by the Lebanese government have been stranded off the coast of Cyprus due to the blockade by Israel. According to Reuters, the first tanker will dock at Zouk, a northern Beirut port, carrying fuel oil for power stations. The second will arrive in Tripoli and is carrying diesel fuel for gas stations. "Two ships have got permission and guarantees to dock today and one should be coming in tomorrow," Bahij Abu Hamze, head of Lebanon's Association of Fuel Importers, told Reuters. The two tankers are transporting more than 90,000 tons of fuel, which should help alleviate the inflated price at the pump. During the war, many gas stations shut down because of the shortage. Those that remained opened sold between five and ten liters to each vehicle. The price of rose to as much as $20 for 20 liters in some Beirut area stations.
