Israelis Wants Resignation Of Olmert And Peretz
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - A poll conducted by Israel's largest newspaper, Yediot Ahronot, showed widespread public displeasure both with the conduct and outcome of the war with Hezbollah. Published Wednesday morning, the results of the survey revealed that a full 63 percent of Israelis feel Defense Minister Amir Peretz did not perform his role adequately, and 57 percent think he should resign as a result. A smaller, but still significant 51 percent majority said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert managed the war poorly, with 41 percent calling for his ouster. Seventy percent said Olmert and Peretz were wrong to accept a ceasefire that failed to guarantee the release of Israel's abducted soldiers. Two-thirds either view Hezbollah as having won the war, or as the conflict having ended in a draw. A mere 14 percent of the public view the government's conduct of the war in a positive light. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said a full public inquiry into their leaders' handling of the situation is necessary. By contrast, an overwhelming 94 percent of Israelis have nothing but praise for their soldiers on the ground.
