Filipino Reporter Survives Ambush North Of The Capital
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Manila, Philippines (AHN) - A Filipino tabloid reporter survives an ambush Monday when a lone suspect fired on him in Manila. Reports reaching the police identifies the victim as Roger Panizal, a reporter for the daily tabloid "Tiktik" (spy). He was immediately rushed to the hospital where physicians say he was unharmed. Panizal told police that a certain George de Jesus was behind the foiled attempt on his life. Panizal is the fourth member of the media that has been attacked in the Camanava area in the past four months. Camanava is located in northern Metro Manila. "Saksi" (witness) reporter Albert Orsolino died when two motorcycle-riding assailants fired on him in a broad daylight ambush in Caloocan City. On July 28, television cameraman Ralph Runez of the government-controlled RPN-9 was gunned by robbers in front of his house also in Caloocan City. And on August 1, Orsolino's cousin, Prudendio Melendrez, a photo-journalist for the daily tabloid "Tanod" (watchmen) was also killed in an ambush in Malabon City. Valenzuela police chief Billy Beltran said Panizal was on board a tricycle when a lone gunman flagged down the same tricycle and asked that he be brought to St. Jude Street in the city. Beltran said, "But before reaching their destination, the passenger reportedly ordered him to stop. A man then appeared and shot Panizal several times."
