Lebanese Refugees Continue To Return Home
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Thousands of refugees continue to flock to their homes across Lebanon as the ceasefire appears to be holding. More than 900,000 people were displaced from their homes during the month-long conflict between Israel and Hizbollah. "We are returning home now," one father said as he packed the family van for the trip back to Nabatiyeh. "Hopefully we will still have places to go when we get there," he continued. According to statements by the militant group Hizbollah, as many as 15,000 homes may have been destroyed in the conflict. Lebanon's Defense Minister Elias Murr told Reuters that the Lebanese government is prepared to send 15,000 troops south of the Litani River in order to help keep the tenuous ceasefire from breaking. Israeli troops are currently retreating from their positions inside southern Lebanon as the refugees begin to return home after weeks of exile in Beirut. The streamline of cars and vans draped in the yellow flags of Hizbollah could be seen on the outskirts of the capital. Thousands of Lebanese remain outside the country. According to Reuters approximately 60,000 foreigners were evacuated during the conflict.
