Poll Shows Plummeting Support For Israeli Gov't
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - The less than satisfactory end to the Israel-Hezbollah war has resulted in plummeting public approval ratings for the ruling Kadima and Labor parties. A poll conducted by Israel's Globes newspaper just before the ceasefire went into effect this week showed that if elections were held today, Kadima and Labor together would win only 32 Knesset seats combined. They currently hold 48 mandates. The poor showing for the government, following strong display of national unity during the war, is the direct result of its acceptance of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which most of the public views as bad for Israel. Only six percent of respondents agreed with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that the resolution represented for Israel an achievement of most of its goals in the war. More than three quarters of Israelis expect the ceasefire to only last between one week and one month, according to the survey.
