World Bank Satisfied With Education Initiative In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - A joint supervision mission of the World Bank (WB) and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) expressed satisfaction about the overall progress on the Bangladesh government's "Education for All" initiative. The mission recommended that, given the rapid expansion of learning centers (from 727 in 2005 to about 8,000 in 2006), improvements in overall management and operation of the centers needs to be made. "The existing monitoring mechanisms also need to be improved and complemented by external evaluations built in the project," the WB says in a press statement on Monday. In support of the initiative, the WB and the SDC, through the Reaching Out of School Children Project (ROSC), are trying to reduce the number of out-of-school children through improved access, quality and efficiency in primary education. About 8,000 learning centers have been established, enrolling over 246,000 children, while 44 Shishu Kalyan Trust Schools cater to working children. The ROSC project, which commenced in mid 2004 with a $51 million USD grant, aims to enroll half a million out-of-school children in Learning Centers to be managed by communities with support from non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
