Death Toll From Chinese Typhoon Reaches 255
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Beijing, China (AHN) - The death toll from typhoon Saomai which recently hit China has reached 255, officials said on Monday. However, more than 100 people are still reported missing after Saomai, the strongest typhoon to have hit the country in five decades, struck Cangnan County in Zhejiang province last Thursday. China's official news agency, Xinhua, said the death toll rose after the southeastern province of Fujian on Monday increased the number of people killed from the initial 40 to 166. With many of the deceased being fishermen. At least 138 people were killed and 1,350 wounded in Fuding city. However, by late Sunday, a total 97 bodies of fishermen were recovered in Shacheng. Typhoon Saomai struck after about 10,000 fishing ships returned to harbor. Xinhua news agency says, "A lot of fishermen stayed on their boats, worrying that they might be damaged in collisions with other ships." The agency adds that, "The wind was so strong that it overturned many ships and a large number of people were killed or went missing."
