Activists Release 4 Men Held In Connection With Mexico Rally Murder
Danielle George - All Headline News Staff Reporter Oaxaca, Mexico (AHN) - Four people taken hostage in Oaxaca have been released after spending 18 hours with activists. The political stand-off started when the teachers in the area went on strike demanding the resignation of the state governor. In the midst of the rally a man was shot dead. The activists reacted to the murder, according to BBC news, by capturing the four men that they believed to be responsible for the 50-year-old man's death. Governor Ulises Ruiz's tenure in office has been called to question since his election win in 2004. Questions about the legitimacy of the election have done nothing to quell the tension in the city, that is now in the midst of pay gripes regarding the teacher's salary. The man killed was identified as Jose Jimenez and the BBC report notes that according to the protesters gunmen had opened fire without provocation as several thousand teachers marched through Oaxaca.
