Death Toll From Typhoon Saomai Rises To 28
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Beijing, China (AHN) - The death toll from Typhoon Saomai rises to 28, as the storm destroys houses and capsizes boats in southeastern China. More than 1.5 million residents in flood-prone areas had been evacuated before the storm landed on Thursday evening. It is the most powerful storm to hit the county in more than 50 years. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, those killed lived in Cangnan County in coastal Zhejiang province, where Saomai hit land. More than 7,300 homes in the county were decimated. Eight Taiwanese sailors are still missing after two ships capsized in a Fujian harbor. Xinhua says four Chinese are missing after their ship struck a reef. Damage is expected to be extensive in areas that are still recovering from Tropical Storm Bilis, which killed more than 600 people. Chinese forecasters say Saomai had winds of up to 135 mph. They called it a "super typhoon" because of its enormous size and high wind speeds. Earlier this week, Saomai killed at least two people in the Philippines.
