Fires Burn In Spain, 1,200 Soldiers Sent To Battle The Flames
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Madrid, Spain (AHN) - Firefighters in Spain continue to battle over 100 wildfires across the country. Authorities have sent over 1,200 soldiers to the Galacia region to help fight fires which have burned over 24,700 acres of land, and killed three people. Police have already arrested five suspected arsonists, while weather conditions are allowing the fire to spread. Firefighters are using 30 specially equipped planes to help what local government spokeswoman Iria Mendez calls "unprecedented" wildfires. According to the BBC, Spanish Environment Minister Cristina Narbona earlier this week urged people to denounce arsonists to the authorities so their crimes did not go unpunished. She said some of the fires could have been started by forestry workers angry at not being drafted over the summer by the regional fire-fighting brigades.
