UK's Parties 'United' Over Terror Plot
Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer London, England (AHN) - The UK's main political parties are "completely united" over a terror plot which would have caused "unprecedented" carnage. Home Secretary Reid in a news conference said, "The loss of life to innocent civilians would have been on an unprecedented scale." The Tories and Lib Dems had "offered their support for our endeavours" while holidaying Prime Minister Tony Blair has briefed the US President, he said. In the recent hours, the government's emergencies committee has reportedly met thrice. The BBC reports that the Cobra committee - responsible for bringing together ministers, officials, police and intelligence chiefs, will continue to convene throughout Thursday. Reid chaired two of the Cobra meetings while another was led by the top civil servant at the Home Office, Sir David Normington. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is in charge of the day-to-day running of the country. Though he was not present at the Cobra meetings but his spokeswoman said he would expect to be at further meetings.
