"Super Typhoon," Saomai Heads For China
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Wenzhou, China (AHN) - More than 1.3 million residents in southeastern China as it prepares for a category five "super typhoon." The typhoons is thought to be the biggest to hit the country since August 1956, when a typhoon in Zhejiang, triggered a tsunami killing over 3000 people. It is now just hours away from an expected landfall between Hong Kong and Shanghai. Li Yuzhu, head of the Zhejiang provincial observatory told Xinhua, "Saomai is packing winds of 216km per hour (134mph) and has outpaced forecasts." Zheijiang has evacuated 760,000 people, along with 569,00 people also residing in the neighboring province of Fujian where heavy rain, strong winds and a high tide hit the area. People living in Wenzhou city in Zheijiang province are stockpiling water and food and reinforcing windows and doors in preparation for the storm. Schools, theaters and stadiums in the region have been opened as community shelters for the displaced. Typhoons and tropical storms are common in Taiwan, Southeast China and the Philippines during the months from July through October.
