Australia To Send More Troops To Afghanistan
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - Australia will send 150 more soldiers to Afghanistan to help secure the nation. Australian Prime Minister John Howard says they will bring their commitment to over 600 troops, the majority of which will help protect their engineers in the central Oruzgan province. Violence in Afghanistan has increased this year, with over 80 military deaths since January. Australia has long been committed to Afghanistan as one of the first countries to help remove the Taliban in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. According to RTE News, Mr. Howard told the Australian Parliament that the level of violence had increased in Afghanistan in recent months as militant groups "seek to chip away at the credibility of the Afghan government and prevent reconstruction taking place." Australia already has about 200 special forces troops in Afghanistan. They are due to return home next month.
