Hundreds Of Chernikhov Drawings Are Stolen From Russian Archive
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter (AHN) - Hundreds of drawings by Russian architect Yakov Chernikhov are stolen from a state archive. The theft of the drawings, worth an estimated $1.3 million, was reported a week after the Hermitage museum reported 221 of its treasures had been stolen. Officials say they have recovered 274 of the works by the avant-garde architect, but they are unsure how many were taken from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. The appearance of two of the sketches at an auction in London alerted authorities to the missing items. Chernikhov was a well-known designer and architect in the constructivist art movement. He died in 1951. Most of his designs were never realized because Soviet authorities mistrusted him. He laid down his ideas in a series of books in the 1920s and 30s.
