Israel Doubts New Peacekeeping Force Will Be Deployed
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - A senior Israeli government official on Sunday expressed doubt that the new multi-national peacekeeping force for southern Lebanon envisioned by Israel, the US and Europe will ever materialize. A draft UN Security Council resolution on ending the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah fails to directly address the make-up or deployment of such a force, deferring the issue to a later, unspecified time. A government source told the Ha'aretz,"There won't be an international force, because there will never be an agreement on it." "If they're spitting blood over a declarative resolution [like the current one], just imagine what will happen when they get to a practical resolution," he added. Authored by the US and France, the resolution is expected to be voted on this week. But other member states of the Security Council have expressed concern over numerous terms which appear to too closely adhere to Israel's position on ending the conflict, and are seeking alterations before they will support the document. Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria, meanwhile, have all rejected the ceasefire proposal contained in the resolution outright.
