Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Caloocan City, Philippines (AHN) - The Northern Police District Command in the Philippines announced on Sunday its arrest of alleged killer of photojournalist Prudencio Melendrez. NPD director, Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil made the revelation during the burial of Melendrez and said the motive of the killing was a "vendetta" and not related to his work as a journalist. Bataoil says, "But although it was not media related, we are committed to solve the case still. It is important to show our unity and condemnation against crime." The police said Roberto Lopez, the alleged gunman in the killing of the journalist, was arrested Friday. Melendrez, who worked for the tabloid Tanod, was killed by three to four suspects in Malabon City on July 31. His cousin, fellow photojournalist Alberto Orsolino of the tabloid "Saksi (Witness)" was also gunned down on May 16 2006. Bataoil adds, "The arrest of remaining suspects, accomplices and accessories to the crimes and their eventual conviction by the court, and the prevention of further killings will be one of my continuing priorities." He said Lopez was positively identified during inquest proceedings by a witness to the Melendrez killing.
