Olmert Slams European Hypocrisy Over Civilian Casualties
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has taken issue with Europe over its condemnation of the Jewish state for unintentionally killing several hundred civilians in Lebanon. In an interview with Germany's Welt am Sonntag published Sunday, Olmert accused Europe's leaders of employing a double standard against Israel when it comes to the costs of war. Asked about European criticism of Israel's alleged use of "disproportionate force," Olmert replied sharply, "Where do they get the right to preach to Israel?" Olmert reminded Europeans that their own recent wars had resulted in mass civilian casualties, and had been launched despite the fact that the nations participating had not suffered even one rocket attack as Israel has. "European countries attacked Kosovo and killed ten thousand civilians. Ten thousand! And none of these countries had to suffer before that from a single rocket," said Olmert. "I'm not saying it was wrong to intervene in Kosovo. But please: Don't preach to us about the treatment of civilians."
