Poisonous Mushrooms Kill 2 More People In Mexico
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Uxtla Gutierrez, Mexico (AHN) - Poisonous mushrooms kill two more people in Mexico, bringing the total number of people who died after ingesting the fungus to 10. All 10 victims are from the same family in a Tenejapa community, in Chiapas state. The Indians ate a soup made with wild mushrooms found in the mountains. Eight other people died earlier this week. An 11th relative did not eat the soup and has not fallen ill. Wild mushrooms are commonly eaten by Indian families. But genetic mutations in some mushrooms have made them poisonous. Local authorities have been gathering mushrooms from open-air markets in an effort to prevent more deaths. Medical officials say the poison found in the mushrooms eaten by the family had severe effects on the liver, making treatment difficult.
