UN Secretary General To Meet Haiti's New Leaders
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer (AHN) - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has landed in Haiti for a short visit to meet Haiti's new political leaders. U.N. presence is still strong in the poor Caribbean nation as its 9,000 troops provide assurance in the ensuing gang violence. Annan was greeted by President Rene Preval. A scheduled meeting is pending with both the newly-elected government and UN officials stationed in the country. He will also hold talks with UN peacekeepers injured by gunmen last July. U.N. troops have been there since a 2004 revolt which removed President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Correspondents claim that the country is now relatively more peaceful since Mr. Preval was put in office last February. Although abductions and gang clashes are still common.
