Typhoon Forces Hundreds Of Thousands Of Evacuations In China
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Beijing, China (AHN) - Typhoon Prapiroon punishes southern China with heavy rains and winds, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate. The typhoon touched down at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, hitting the cities of Yangjiang and Dianbai in Guangdong province. The storm was moving at speeds of 9 to 12 mph toward the northwest. About 400,000 people in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan have been evacuated. Some 84,000 residents of Guangxi fled their homes. Numbers for the other provinces have not been released. Ferry and railway services from Hainan to the mainland have been suspended. The city is located about 370 miles from Hong Kong. Meteorologists forecast storms through Saturday for the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and Hainan. Last month, the region was slammed by Tropical Storm Bilis, resulting in flooding and landslides that killed more than 600 people. Gao Shuanzhu, a senior official at the China's national observatory, tells the official Xinhua News Agency that Prapiroon is "as strong, if not stronger" than Bilis.
