Afghanistan To Deport South Korean Christians
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - The Afghan government says concern for the safety of evangelical Christians from South Korea prompted its decision to deport the group of 1,500 people. Islamic clerics have accused the group of proselytizing by preaching Christianity. It is illegal to convert people to non-Islamic religions in Afghanistan. A spokesman for the Institute of Asian Culture and Development says they are in the country to provide medical assistance, educational and cultural programs. Hundreds of Afghans staged a rally to protest the group at a mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif. A government official tells AFP news agency, "They were given tourist visas and now it seems they are misusing their tourist visas." He adds, "The risk of them becoming a target is very high." The IACD spokesman tells AFP, "We are not against the policies of Afghanistan. We respect and we love Afghanistan."
