Wall-To-Wall Israeli Support For Lebanon War
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - The results of a public opinion poll published one of Israel's largest daily newspapers Thursday showed overwhelming support for the nation's war against Hezbollah. A solid 80 percent of the 500 respondents surveyed by Ma'ariv said they support the army's mission and conduct in southern Lebanon. Seventy-four percent said they feel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his government are doing a great job leading the nation at this time of crisis. Those numbers are sharply contrasted by the public reaction to Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 1982 in response to rocket attacks and cross-border incursions by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian forces. Support for that operation lasted only one week before the public began turning against the government of Prime Minister Menachem Began, culminating in mass outrage after an IDF-allied Christian Lebanese militia massacred Palestinians near Beirut. This time around it is Hezbollah for whom nearly all Israelis feel outrage, after the group launched an unprovoked assault on Israel's northern border on July 12, killing eight IDF soldiers and abducting two others. Since then Hezbollah has indiscriminately showered thousands of rockets onto communities across the northern half of Israel.
