British Official Warns Against Civil War In Iraq
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Britain's outgoing ambassador in Baghdad has warned Prime Minister Tony Blair via a confidential memo that civil war could be a more likely outcome than democracy in Iraq. William Patey who left Iraq last week also said sectarian violence could easily tear the country apart. Patey predicted a bleak future for Iraq as a country. However, the BBC quotes the memo as saying, "Every day the capacity of the Iraqi security forces to manage their own security is growing." He wrote in a diplomatic telegram from Baghdad that, "The prospect of a low intensity civil war and a de facto division of Iraq is probably more likely at this stage than a successful and substantial transition to a stable democracy." Reportedly the memo goes on saying, "Even the lowered expectation of President Bush for Iraq - a government that can sustain itself, defend itself and govern itself and is an ally in the war on terror - must remain in doubt."
