Israel Vows To Widen Ground Offensive In Lebanon
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday said there will be no ceasefire in Lebanon unless the U.N.-proposed multinational force is deployed in the south of the country. The BBC quotes the Israeli PM as saying, "I said I'd be ready to enter a ceasefire when the international force is deployed." He added that, "We're not going to stop the fire and wait for weeks until the international force comes in because in these weeks the reality on the ground will again be reversed to what it was and this is not what we want to do." Olmert said Israel could not stop the offensive in southern Lebanon because Hezbollah would take advantage of the calm to carry out more attacks while arrangements for the international force are made. Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli soldiers invaded Baalbek, further inside Lebanon. The troops captured several people it said were Hezbollah fighters. The militant group has denounced the Israeli claim saying that those seized were civilians.
