EU Pushes For Immediate Ceasefire In Lebanon
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer Atlanta, GA (AHN) - As Israel launches a major attack deep into Lebanon, Hezbollah says its guerrillas are fighting Israeli commandos trapped inside a hospital in Baalbek. Witnesses say the hospital was hit in an Israeli airstrike and was burning and officials in Lebanon say that nearly 500 civilians have been killed. Heavy fighting across the Israeli border in Lebanon rages on, with Israel now saying that 300 of Hezbollah's 2,000 fighters have been killed since the conflict began three weeks ago. Fighting was concentrated near the Lebanese villages of Tayba And Aita-ul-shaab, where three Israeli soldiers were killed and another 25 wounded. The Israeli cabinet approved expansion of the army's ground offensive, but the Israeli military says that it will take them at least a month to achieve their goals. However, representatives of the European Union are now pushing for an immediate ceasefire. The foreign ministers of the union met to discuss the issue. Even the Israeli Prime Minister, who repeatedly said, "There is no cease-fire," now says there will be one eventually. Says British Foreign Secretary, Margaret Beckett, ""What we all hope to achieve today is an agreement to call for an end to violence and get a basis for political agreement.
