Series Of 40 Bomb, Arson Attacks Target Thai Officials
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Narathiwat, Thailand (AHN) - A series of coordinated bomb and arson attacks target government and civilian facilities in the south of Thailand, injuring at least two people. The homemade devices struck the homes of police and government officials, along with karaoke bars, and a train station in three majority-Muslim provinces along the border with Malaysia. Officials say it was the biggest and most well-organized attack in the area in more than a month. Over the past two years, 1,400 people have died in attacks by suspected Islamic militant separatists. Lieutenant General Ongkorn Thongtrasom, the region's top military official, tells AFP, "It was an effort to disturb the provinces in the south, including about 40 cases of shootings, burning rubber tires, arson, bombings and petrol bombs in the three provinces." He says six suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks. The Lt. Gen. says, "We are monitoring the intelligence information closely. We knew that the separatists wanted to do something, but this was an unexpected incident." One soldier and one suspected militant was injured in the attacks, which began around 8:30 p.m.
