India Bans Child Domestic Labor
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Delhi, India (AHN) - The Indian government issues an order banning children from working as domestic servants, in roadside restaurants, or in other service industry jobs. The ban applies to children under 14 and goes into effect this October. Children are also barred from working in teashops, restaurants, hotels, motels, resorts, spas or other recreational facilities. More than 12.6 million children are estimated to be working in India, mostly as domestic servants or in roadside food stalls. A senior official in the Labour Ministry, SK Srivastava, tells BBC News that "the Technical Advisory Committee on Child Labour regularly surveys the risk factors involved in any industry and depending on our findings we have taken this decision". The committee warned that children under 14 were prey to physical, mental and sexual abuse. Srivastava says employers who violate the ban will be penalized with fines or imprisonment. India already has laws banning children from working in hazardous industries, but they have been ineffective in certain areas. Thousands of children continue to work in firecracker and matchstick factories.
