Rebels Hit Sri Lanka's Main Naval Port
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - Violence in Sri Lanka has entered into its seventh day on Tuesday as the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam used 122-millimeter artillery to shell Sri Lanka's main naval base, killing four troopers and wounding 30 others, while military warplanes continued its air strikes on rebel positions as the battle for control of an irrigation canal heats up. The rebels shelled the naval bases at Trincomalee as a ferry carrying 800 troops was about to dock. A military official was quoted by the AP as saying, "The 'Jetliner' ferry was making its way to the harbor when the... attack started." The official said five boats belonging to the Tiger Tamil chased the ferry transporting troops returning home, but the navy was able to keep them at bay while ground troops fired multi-barrel rocket launchers to neutralize the rebels. He adds, "Four naval ratings were killed and about 30 injured, Several buildings caught fire and we are putting them out." At least 36 explosions were heard from within the naval compound next to the main Trincomalee harbor and reports have a navy gunboat as being heavily damaged.
