Four Al-Qaeda Suspects Arrested In Afghanistan
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - US-led coalition forces supported by Afghan troops captured four suspected al-Qaeda operatives in eastern Afghanistan, the Press Trust of India sources said. The men, whose names and nationalities were not revealed, were seized during an early morning raid in Khost province, where four other suspected al-Qaeda members were captured earlier. "The purpose of the operation was to detain al-Qaeda operatives who are suspected of coordinating the smuggling of explosives into Afghanistan and planning attacks against afghan and coalition forces," the coalition said. The men were captured without any fighting and there were no casualties on either side, it said in a statement. An AK-47 rifle and a pistol were also seized. They were caught in a village about just a short distance from the border with Pakistan, where dozens of al-Qaeda operatives fled after US-led forces ousted the Taliban regime in late 2001. A briefcase filled with "extremist-related" documents was also seized, the coalition said. Khost is a hotbed of Taliban activity where the US dominated coalition comes under frequent attack. Al-Qaeda militants are believed to be fighting alongside the Taliban movement in a growing insurgency against the government of President Hamid Karzai.
