North And South Korea Exchange Gunfire Along DMZ
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - North and South Korean troops exchange gunfire along the Demilitarized Zone for the first time in about a year. A military official says North Korean troops fired two shots at a South Korean guard post near the heavily fortified border. One of the shots hit the guard post. South Korean troops immediately returned fire with six shots. Joint Chiefs of Staff official tells Reuters by telephone, "No one was injured in the incident." The last exchange of gunfire between the two Koreas occurred in October 2005. During that incident, North Korea shot at a South Korean guard post, and the South returned fire. In 2002, a major clash between the navies of the two countries along a disputed maritime border resulted in deaths and injuries. Tensions heated up between the two Koreas after Pyongyang test-fired seven missiles recently. Seoul has said it would suspend humanitarian aid until North Korea participates in six-party talks on ending its nuclear weapons program.
