Maoists Seek Support For Republican System For Nepal
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) - Three months after the re-establishment of democracy in Nepal, Maoists in the Himalayan country are now actively campaigning for a Republican form of government. According to a report in Nepal News, the rebels have intensified their efforts in this direction. The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) has announced that it will launch a two-month long campaign in the first week of August to garner public support ahead of the forthcoming constituent assembly elections. "The purpose of the campaign is to create public support for unconditional constituent assembly polls," CPN-M district chief Pathik says. The campaign for a Republic in the Chitwan district will commence from August 5 at Madi. It will move to western Chitwan on August 17 and from there it will go to the city areas from September 6 to 15. After this, it will cover eastern Chitwan from September 17 to October 6 before concluding in Narayangarh. The campaign to woo the public towards accepting a Republican form of government has been going on for the past decade, which has seen extensive guerrilla warfare, resulting in the loss of over 13,000 lives. In June, the Maoists launched a diplomatic initiative to convince the international community and the neighboring countries like India that they were sincere about setting up a democratic system of government.
