U.N. Security Council Calls On Iran To Halt Nuclear Program
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer New York, NY (AHN) - The United Nations' Security Council passed a resolution on Monday that called on Iran to suspend its nuclear program before the end of August or face possible sanctions from the Council. The resolution urged Iran to, "suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development." Monday's resolution was adopted after a 14 - 1 vote by the Council members. Qatar alone voted against the move. The resolution comes as the first move by the U.N. in the long running nuclear standoff between Iran and the West. The U.S. and her allies believe that Iran is planning to build atomic bombs with its nuclear technology. Iran has dismissed the allegations, saying it has plans to develop power for commercial use with its nuclear program. The resolution says if Iran fails to comply with the order by August 31, the Security Council could take "appropriate measures." The document does not threaten the immediate imposition of economic sanctions on Tehran.
