34 Children Among 56 Dead In Qana Strike
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Qana, Lebanon (AHN) - The Lebanese Red Cross confirmed Sunday that the Israeli air strikes in the village of Qana in southern Lebanon which killed 56 people, include 34 children, in the deadliest attack in 19 days of fighting. Rescuers digging through the rubbles using their bare hands, recovered bodies, some charred beyond recognition while others blown to pieces, when Israeli war planes destroyed several buildings. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed "great sorrow" for the air strikes but blamed Hezbollah guerillas for allegedly using the area to launch rockets at Israel. Iran said the attack in Qana is a result of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit in the region. Rice met with Ehud but cancelled her trip to Beirut at the behest of Lebanon. The Red Cross put the number of deaths in Lebanon to more than 500, mostly civilians. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has asked U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to hold an emergency Security Council meeting to press for an immediate cease-fire after the Qana attack.
