Congo Preparing for Presidential Election
Nicole King - All Headline News Staff Writer Kinhasa, Congo (AHN) - The people of Congo will choose a new leader Sunday. This will be the first multiparty presidential election since the country won independence nearly a half a century ago. Voters will also choose a new parliament for the first time since 1965. Dozens have died in election violence and mobs have clashed with riot police in the capital. The election is supported by the United Nations and is the organization's largest election safekeeping mission ever. It has sent 2,000 workers to the country to secure the election. Aid workers in Congo say about a 1,000 people are dying every day from hunger and disease. Decades of civil wars, army looting, civil unrest, corrupt governments has kept the country unstable.
