Singapore To Forbid Outdoor Rallies During IMF/WB Meeting
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Singapore (AHN) - Singapore has announced that it will ban outdoor protests during the annual meeting of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB). There will be an alternative indoor venue set-up for registered civil groups. The police chief of staff, Soh Wai Wah told the AP that outdoor protests during the Sept. 11-20 meetings would threaten security. The opportunity could be used by terrorists, disrupt the day-to-day activities of the area, and make things "unpleasant" for residents. "In the current security climate, the priority is to ensure the safety and security of our residents, visitors and delegates to the meetings," Soh said. "The police recognize the importance of the participation of civil security organizations in the event. We have made maximum effort to facilitate their involvement, within the framework of our laws," Soh added. "However, we are unable to waive the current rules which prohibit outdoor demonstrations and processions, so as not to compromise security." Under Singapore law, any outdoor gathering of more than four people will require permits. Singaporean citizens can hold indoor meetings without a permit if it does not deal with race or religion. Only civil groups approved by the World Bank will be able to enter the indoor venue. Police will provide 24-hour security for the 16,000 delegates and visitors expe |
