Report: UN Stays Blind To Hezbollah Activity
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Correspondent (AHN) - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is tasked with patrolling southern Lebanon and reporting violations of international resolutions regarding that area. But Ghanaian soldiers manning UNIFIL post 6-52 told The Jerusalem Post they had no knowledge whatsoever of the massive Hezbollah arms build-up taking place in the nearby town of Maroun a-Ras. Hezbollah has hundreds of fighters in the area, and has built extensive fortifications and ammunition depots, which are now being besieged and attacked by Israeli ground forces. The commander of the Ghanaian contingent, which has been in the area for three months, said he has "never seen one of" the Hezbollah terrorists. "You cannot easily identify them in the population." Of course, it doesn't help matters when those tasked with monitoring the area have "zero contact" with the locals, as admitted by the officer. He further noted that despite the intense fighting in southern Lebanon, UN commanders have ordered the unarmed observers to remain at their posts. After four peacekeepers were inadvertently killed in an Israeli air strike earlier this week, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper criticized the UN for keeping its personnel deployed in the area.
