Opposition Calls For Taiwanese President To Resign
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Taipei, Taiwan (AHN) - Taiwan's opposition leaders have stepped up their calls for President Chen Shui-bian to resign, claiming corruption in his administration. Political leaders have long attacked Chen for scandals involving his family and close circle, but this is the first time they have aimed corruption charges directly at the president. The Associated Press says the Ministry of Audit found irregularities in the Presidential Office involving a secret fund that is normally used to support overseas diplomacy efforts. It says that a total of $1.1 million of the fund were still unliquidated by the Office of the President. But the presidential office says such fund is not subject for liquidation being confidential in nature. Opposition lawmaker Chang Hsien-yao of the People's First Party said the controversy is enough ground to file impeachment proceedings against the president. Chang said, "We will pursue this case thoroughly."
