Volcanic Rumbling Sends Thousands Fleeing In Indonesia
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - Mount Karangetang continues to rumble Friday, as vulcanologists warned Friday of an imminent eruption as red-hot lava is oozing from its crater. Saut Simatupant, a vulcanologist with the national volcanology monitoring office in West Java said they are on the highest alert, advising authorities to remove residents from five villages that lay at the base of the volcano. Scientists say the volcano's lava flow was stretching as far as 1.75 kilometers down the volcano's slopes. Simatupant told AFP, "We are continuously monitoring the volcano's activity but fortunately residents there are well-adapted to its activities so they occasionally conduct self-evacuations." Local officials estimate at least 16,000 people leaving in eastern Siau have to be evacuated. The volcano is located on Siau Island, about 2,300 kilometers northeast of Jakarta and 160 kilometers north of Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province. AFP says Karangetang is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Six people were killed by lava flow or heat in the volcano's last eruption in May 1992.
