Explosion At Chinese Chemical Plant Kills At Least 12
Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer Shanghai, China (AHN) - An explosion at a chemical plant in eastern China at 9 a.m Friday (9 p.m. ETD Thursday) shattered the facility, killing at least 12 people and injuring about 12 more. Rescuers looking through the rubble recovered the bodies mid-afternoon Friday. The cause of the explosion, which occurred at the Fudu Chemical Plant in Jiangsu province's Linhai Township, is still being investigated. According to Fudu's website, the plant is a major producer of fluorochemicals for industry. Previous newspaper reports said the company had been cited for violating pollution standards in the past, but the reports did not mention any safety problems. Although extremely high levels of pollution were detected after the explosion, authorities evacuated 7,000 people from within a 1.2-mile radius of the plant as a precaution. About an hour before the explosion at Fudu, an explosion occurred at another chemical plant, seriously injuring at least four people. There was also an explosion aboard an oil tanker Friday, which injured three people. No deaths were reported in either explosion, and the three are thought to be unrelated.
