Strong Earthquake Rattles Taiwan
Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer Taipei, Taiwan (AHN) - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan on Friday, shattering buildings in the capital but causing no serious damage or casualties. The quake's epicenter was located about 90 miles southeast of Taipei, the Central Weather Bureau said. However Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no threat of a tsunami. The quake was also felt in the Yonaguni islands in southwestern Japan. However no reports of damage or injuries are reported there either. Though Taiwan's weather bureau has warned against aftershocks, but they were not expected to cause any damage since the epicenter's distance from the island. Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
