Saddam Speaks Out About Being Put To Death "Like A Common Criminal"
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - A thinner but combative Saddam Hussein told the court on Wednesday that he preferred to die by firing squad rather than hang "like a common criminal." The ex-dictator of Iraq made his final statements before the tribunal gives a verdict. The prosecution lawyers have requested for the death penalty for Hussein and two of the other seven defendants for their role in the deaths of Shia Muslims. The killings were the result of a crackdown following a 1982 assassination attempt against the Iraqi ruler in Dujail. Hussein's court-appointed attorney made a final summation arguing that the prosecution witnesses and documents have failed to associate the ousted leader to any of the atrocities in Dujail. Mr. Hussein, appearing in a white, open collar shirt and dark jacket, grumbled that Americans brought him against his will, from a hospital. He continued to protest that he was rushed to the hospital on the 17th day of a hunger strike and force fed through a tube. Despite the fact that he had gone for more than two weeks without food, sources say he was said to be no less vigorous, though he appeared to have lost weight.
