Russia Inks Deal With Venezuela To Sell Military Planes
Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer Moscow, Russia (AHN) - Russia has inked a deal with Venezuela to sell 24 military planes and 53 helicopters. Sergei Chemezov, director-general Russia's state arms-trading made the remarks on the sidelines of the meeting between President Vladimir Putin and visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. The $1 billion deal will provide Venezuela with advanced fighter aircraft and Kalashnikov assault rifles despite U.S. objections. The President of the Latin American country is in Moscow for a three-day visit. Chávez's visit is part of a world tour to gather allies for a geopolitical counterbalance to the U.S. and to rally support for his bid to secure a nonpermanent seat for Caracas on the United Nations Security Council. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said last week that Russia had struck a deal of 1 billion U.S. dollars with Venezuela to sell 30 Sukhoi-30 fighters and as many helicopters to the country.
