PM Singh Of India: We Will Not Compromise On Nuke Deal
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - India will not accept any new conditions or obligations in the civilian nuclear deal with the U.S., said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. He also declared that India's strategic program was out America's realm. The Prime Minister was speaking to members of the Lok Sabha, Parliament: "We will never compromise in a manner which is inconsistent with the provisions of the joint statement of July 18, 2005." Additionally, Dr. Singh said the Government was open to discussions on the deal and he offered to make a statement on the issue. Singh intervened after repeated demands for a statement from him as he let Union Minister of Stated Anand Sharma deflect questions. The Prime Minister responded to apprehensions about India being forced to concede a lot more than what had been revealed publicly. Sharma said the final bilateral agreement would be signed only after the U.S. amended the 1954 Atomic Energy Act. He told the Hindu, "The amendment of its legislation for an India-specific waiver is a pre-condition."
