Philippines May Face UN Sanctions For Rights Abuse
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The Philippine Commission on Human Rights warned Thursday, Manila may face sanctions from the United Nations for the government's failure to submit reports on alleged human rights violations in the country. CHR chair Purificacion Quisumbing said the failure of the Arroyo administration to stop the killings and alleged abductions of left-wing activists and government critics may be enough ground for the U.N. to blacklist the country. President Gloria Macapaga-Arroyo is facing eight impeachment complaints before Congress. The charges include allegations of human rights abuses related to the unsolved deaths of activists and government critics. The state's rights commission chief made the warning during a symposium inside the military's general headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo. She said the government had yet to submit 14 "overdue reports," some dating to as far back as 1992. As a member of the U.N., the government was obliged to submit reports on the human rights situation in the country. She told participants, "The Philippines can be blacklisted by the U.N. if it fails to explain why it has not submitted the reports. Second is the number of disappearances of activists.
