Israel's Kiryat Shemona Becoming A Ghost Town
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Correspondent Kiryat Shemona, Israel (AHN) - Situated just six miles from the Lebanese border, the northern Israel community of Kiryat Shemona has become a ghost town after being hit by hundreds of Hezbollah rockets over the past two weeks. Home to some 25,000 people, Kiryat Shemona is no stranger to artillery and other attacks emanating from nearby southern Lebanon, but the current round of violence has been more than most can take. Ynet reported that during a visit to the town Wednesday, Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Benizri was told that roughly 60 percent of its residents have already fled to Israel's safer central and southern regions. The remaining residents, most who simply cannot afford to leave, are looking to the government to put together an evacuation plan. Many in Israel have expressed anger as the international community and media focus attention on the plight of Lebanese civilians, but ignore the humanitarian crisis in Israel. Nearly two million people live in the areas currently under Hezbollah rocket fire. Those who have not fled spend much of their time hot, cramped bomb shelters.
